Dr Anja Steinbauer

Dr. Steinbauer is a well known figure on the London philosophy scene. A German by birth, with an accent eminently suited to lecturing, she divides her time betweeen editing the popular magazine Philosophy Now, being president of Philosophy for All (Anja, if you need a web designer, do email), and teaching at the Mary Ward Centre in Bloomsbury. Oh, and coming to talk to us ..

A point of interest, Dr. Steinbauer is also a specialist in Sinology - the study of China - having completed her PhD with a thesis based on the New Confucian philosopher, Tang Junyi.

She'll be talking on something completely different: Feminist Approaches to Ethics, with a polite response by our very own Dr. Michael Lacewing. I've had the pleasure of witnessing Michael reply to a visiting lecturer before, and believe me, he performs. (and chuckles on occasion).

Mr Dike Okoh's Personal View

(with a more flattering picture)

Dr Anja Steinbauer has prolific insight with regards to all things philosophical. I have had the pleasure of being taught by her in the past and consequently I’ve been on the receiving end (and have also witnessed) the expert dispensing of information concerning, in no particular order: ethics, political philosophy, critical thinking, ideas in the modern world (how movements such as the enlightenment affect us today) feminist philosophies, continental philosophy, philosophy of mind and Chinese philosophy. Dr Steinbauer is a lecturer who facilitates not only the understanding of key philosophical ideas and principles, but is also relentlessly concerned with making the study of philosophy more inclusive and accessible. Anja is the president of Philosophy for All and co-edits the popular monthly magazine Philosophy now; teaching at the Mary Ward Centre and Birkbeck College in Bloomsbury, London.

Dr Steinbauer is also an expert sinologist. I once asked Anja what her PhD thesis was about. She told me it related to Confucian philosopher Tan Junyi’s system of 'nine horizons'. No, I didn’t know who he was either. Morgan has kindly provided the link for those of you who want to investigate further.

At the society Dr Steinbauer will be talking about “feminist approaches to ethics” with our very own Dr Michael lacewing responding. When responding to visiting lectures, Dr Lacewing is what I call a master “freestyler”, or, as Mr Evetts put it - “believe me, he performs”. This’ll be good…
